HYSTERECTOMY & FIBROID PROCEDURES
- Minimal access surgery, also known as keyhole or laparoscopic surgery is a revolutionary method of undergoing surgeries and has immense advantages. It is called so, because in comparison to the traditional larger cut across the tummy, we can perform surgeries through keyhole sized half to 1 cm cuts which require only single stitches each.
- As the incisions are significantly smaller, post surgery pain is much lesser as compared to the traditional methods and the patient can be up and about on the
same day. - The other benefits to the patient are an earlier discharge from the hospital, a faster return to normal daily activities and diet, better cosmetic appearance and lesser chances of developing a hernia.
- As we use a high resolution camera to perform surgery through laparoscopy, we have a superior and detailed view of the internal organs and this gives a definite advantage in complex surgeries for certain diseases like endometriosis.
- Many gynaecological problems like fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and others may require surgical treatment and most gynaecologically surgeries can be performed by laparoscopy today. So if there is any gynaecological issue troubling you, please consult us to know if there is a right surgery for you.
The primary role of the uterus is to bear a pregnancy. Removal of only the uterus does not affect your general health.
Hormones produced by the ovaries are required for the maintenance of good health. Unless the ovaries are diseased or you are menopausal and they have already stopped functioning, the ovaries are generally not removed during a hysterectomy
No, uterus removal does not cause weight gain. Weight gain may be associated with the perimenopausal changes that the body goes through and is mistakenly attributed to the co incidentally occurring surgery
In a routine hysterectomy, the vaginal length and glands are not compromised. Therefore there is no effect on your sexual life and no differences in the sexual experience of both partners, before and after surgery
Fibroids are overgrowths of the muscular part of the uterus and are not primarily cancerous. However, fast growing and large fibroids can rarely turn cancerous.
Women with large fibroids, and those that cause symptoms like heavy bleeding, painful periods, miscarriages or infertility do much better after surgeries for fibroid removal. Small fibroids, that do not cause symptoms or have any other effects do not always require surgery or treatment and can be observed over a period of time.
Depending on the reason for treating fibroids, there are other options that can help in symptom relief. These include hormonal tablets or injections and a hormonal intrauterine device. These medications can help shrink the fibroids and improve symptoms. However, they will not help to cure the fibroids.
Fibroid removal surgery is called myomectomy. It can be performed by the laparoscopic or open route. In case of small fibroids inside the cavity of the uterus, hysteroscopic surgery (without stitches, done through the vagina) can also be done. As fibroids have a tendency to regrow, in case there are no plans of pregnancies in the future, uterus removal can also be
considered. This reduces the chances of the fibroids coming back.
Generally an uncomplicated myomectomy with good post surgery recovery does not negatively affect fertility. In fact, fibroid removal done for fertility problems has a positive impact on child bearing. However, there is a small chance of reduced fertility due to adhesions formed due to surgery. This small risk is true for any surgery of the tummy and varies from patient to patient.
